My first experience reading a Jodie Picoult book was when the movie My Sister’s Keeper was coming out on DVD. I wanted to watch the movie and my aunt suggested I read the book first. So I did…boy…this was the first book I actually physically threw across the room because I couldn’t stop crying. I was…shook. To this day, I have not had a book do this, the same way My Sister Keeper has done so. I also grew up past the age of 10 and learned to be “a little” less dramatic when reading. (Thank you fanfiction…) Long story short, Jodie Picoult knows how to touch a soul as she had with mine. She was my first experience bawling my eyes out over a text instead of screen.
This made me love her. Similar to how everyone says Suzanne Collins only writes books when she has something to say, Jodie Picoult always has something to say and she’ll write it in a way that hits the closest to home. I know when I pick up one of her books, she's addressing an issue she believes to be important. From Suicide, to gun violence, to DNA designer babies, she always has a way of spinning things that address the issue that makes the reader feel different about it at the end of the book. These are complex stories that sulk into your brain that when you're remembering the feelings 21 years later, I still remember exactly why I threw that book across the room.
Her latest book is Any Other Name, published in 2024. On her website she says she takes about 9 months to write a book and on top of that, she is constantly writing everyday. In a question asked, she said it’s like her prescription medication. If you can’t write, she starts to get cranky, like when my husband knows I haven’t eaten. Hangry is a real thing. As of the making of this post there is no new book update coming, however I feel like one might be around the corner.
If you love realism, dealing with hard topics and reading about the complexity of humanities, Jodie Picoult is the storyteller for you. The way she makes her characters' reality feel like yours draws you in and leaves you wanting more after you finally turn the last page.
