I Got a Boy - Girls' Generation

Girls’ Generation’s I Got a Boy was released on January 1, 2013 as the lead single from the Album I Got a Boy, and featured as the first track off the album. Lyrics written by Yoo young-jin, with composition by Yoo Young-Jin, Will Simms, Ann Judith Wik, & Sarah Lundback Bell and arrangement by Will Simms, Anne Judith Wik, & Sarah Lundback Bell the goal of the song had been to make a mix-mash of different genres fluidly. The song is often called the bohemian Rhapsody of Kpop as being the first to truly mix and match so many genres into one song. Fun Fact on the song is that at 1:40 the beats per minute is 1:40, and when member Jessica says to bring it back to 1:40, she is indicating both the time of the song when the chorus came in, and the beats per minute.

I Got a Boy features members Hyoyeon, Jessica, Seohyun, Sooyoung, Sunny, Taeyeon, Tiffany, Yoona, and Yuri with an average age of 23.6 years old at the time of release.

The song has around 558 words with the song being nearly split in half language wise with 301 words (53.9%) in Korean while 257 words (46.1%) in English. About 45% (251 words) is sung in unison while 55% (307 words) in individual sections. About 36.5words is the average per member with a standard deviation of 10.2 and margin of error being 3.4. Member Taeyeon has the most amount of words while member Yoona has the least by about 2 words. [See table for full rank and #’s]

The song is about 4 minutes and 31 seconds with the total time sung 4 minutes and 41 seconds.  The higher sung time than time on the track is because multiple members were singing different words at the same time or overlapped by a few seconds during their section.  About 1:41 minutes (32%) were sung in unison with 3:00 minutes (68%) sung by individuals.   On average members had about 20 seconds with a standard deviation of 8.7 and margin of error being 2.9.  Member Taeyon had the most time with member Hyoyeon having the least amount by about 2 seconds. Girls’ Generation won 6 music show awards and was nominated for 7 awards during the award cycle winning 3 of them.  One of the awards was the first ever Youtube Award for music video of the year, where they beat out PSY, and other big western artists. I Got a Boy peaked at number 1 on 3 South Korea charts and peaked at number 3 on the US world digital. The song has been featured on 9 different lists with the highest being a Billboard 2019 list and time magazine list at number 5 overall.
