Breakdown of Points

 Hello,

I am Otta.  I like K-pop and I like turning songs into stats.  You may find my YouTube channel where I started to post Time Race videos for the songs and albums I have been dissecting.  I plan on expanding on different types of videos as I grow, but I thought that would be a great place to start.

When coming up with my main point system I did try to get as far and balance as possible.  Removing my opinion on the song to try and see which songs are actually "bops" versus "flops" on a pure data level.  Are the songs fair or unfair to other group members and which song should be graded an A versus a F?

With those questions in mind, I have been trying to figure out a system that helps me be as unbiased as possible using math and data collection.

Firstly why word count and time count?

Think of it as if paper versus application.  Is the song a good idea on paper versus when it is in application, or is it worse on paper versus in application.  Many fans just look at the application but remove how the song looked fair to start with.  How good was the blueprint before the building was built?  It helps settle the question before it starts.

The point system is broken down in the categories below

  • Standard Deviation (For both Time and Word count)
    • A standard deviation tells me how fair the song is.  I use based on 68.3 confidence level for those who like stats rather than a 95% because this is for fun, rather than for a direct study).  I am also using the data I collect as population rather than sample.
  • Margin of Error (For both Time and Word count)
    • The margin of error tells me the possible error in the sampling data, giving back points that I might have mistakenly taken off in the standard.
  • Charts
    • Where do songs place on the charts
  • Music Show Wins
    • Wins won during the weekly music shows - strictly for the Kpop community.  Almost all B-sides will be excluded or receive a zero in this category as they are not up for nominations.
  • Awards (Wins and Nominations)
    • Awards to the songs at the time, not the artist during that award season cycle.  So if a group won an award for the album, the album got the win, if they won best new artist, the award is not counted because it goes to the act, not the song or album.
  • Lists/Ratings
    • This is where those end of year lists from magazines, like the Rolling stone, billboard, etc come into play.  If songs also receive a star rating, they will also be included as well.
How does the Math work:

For all my songs, each of them starts off with 400 points.  Regardless of the song, everyone is in the positives.  This allows B-sides the chance to shine amongst themselves.
  • Standard Deviation
    • 200 - (Word count SD + Time Count SD) = # Points
  • Margin of Error
    • 200 - (Word count MoE + Time Count MoE) = # Points
  • Charts - every place earns a 100 points minus where they fall.  No one will ever earn 100 points per chart, the highest you can earn here is 99 and the lowest is 1.  If they place below 100 on a chart like 124 on a 200 chart system, then they earn 1 point for that chart placement.
    • 100 - Place on the chart = # Points
  • Music Show Award Wins
    • 10 x # of wins = # points
  • Lists - same as chart systems.  If the lists were ranked, they will earn 100 points minus the placement.  If there is no rank, they automatically earn 99 points.
    • Ranked: 100 - place on rank = # points
    • Unranked: 100 - 1 = 99 points
  • Reviews - If it is out of 100, it would be the # of points already earned.  If it is stars, it would be out of 10 points x 10 = 100.
    • Out of 100: Given 78/100 metric = 78 points
    • Stars: Given 3.5 stars = 3.5 x 2 = 7 out of 10 points (7 x 10) = 70 points
Grade of Songs & Albums
The grade of songs is purely based on the standard deviation only for both Word and Time.

Song Grades - both Time and Word count;  Album Grades is the average of all of the songs standard deviation to make it fair as possible.  Same grade scale as the songs.
  • A+ (0-5)
  • A (6-10)
  • B+ (11-15)
  • B (16-20)
  • C+ (21-25)
  • C (26-30)
  • D+ (31-35)
  • D (36-40)
  • F (41+)

Note: Solo songs/featured songs, will remain ungraded as they do not have a standard deviation.  There is no "Fair" versus "unfair" as they are the lead singer.  For points wise, they will automatically be given the standard deviation and margin of error of 1, earning them 99 points for both.
